What if they have their books in their book sacks memorized....great! That is a good first step in reading. Encourage them to point to each word, talk about the picture, and have them point up individual words to you. Talk about the story and ask them what happened. Read 2-3 (their newest one first) books each day with your child. Also, don't forget to work on their word ring. Thank you for returning the books sacks daily. Also, IF time please continue to read their favorite picture or chapter books with them....what a great bedtime ritual!
Practice counting....January's goal is 75 or higer! We have the children count completely independent with no prompts or help. Thank you for all you do with your children! 100 by the end of April!
We will also begin our unit on addition and subtraction and continue practicing writing numbers correctly. They must be able to write to 20 or higher by the end of the year with no reverals or help.
Our Day in Kindergarten......2013-2014 After arriving and greeting the children we work on attendance and lunch count. The children work on their morning routine of finding their seats, putting away their daily red folder, moving their lunch clip and hanging up bookbag and coat. Then we begin.....we start with calendar where we are learning the date, months of the year, days of the week, counting, number sense, weather and shapes. We then start our daily math lesson with review, new lesson and practice...usually with a hands on section as well as a paper practice on some days. Then we move over to the word wall and Chant our ABC chart, learning letters and the sounds they make, then chant our Name chart, learning names and the beginning sounds then onto saying our Word Wall words. Each week 1-2 words are added so the children can use these words in writing and reading. We then have a story and work on comprehension and shared reading with big books OR their interactive writings. The children then generate a writing idea for our interactive writing, we use the ABC chart and Name chart to connect the sounds the words make, plus learn making the letters. The biggest impact of interactive writing time is to learn to write ideas in complete sentences...which will happen by the end of the year if not sooner! We move onto Writer's workshop where the children try their own writings and picture to match their work. We individually conference with the children and work on writing skills. The children then share their work and what they have learned. We are now adding more deatails to our work, writing 2-3 sentences linked to their selected topic. We are working on what good writers do and currently making this chart to post. Then is it lunch and recess...... and then move to Reading workshop where the children meet with me to work on reading skills or master what they already know. The other children will be working in Reading, Writing and Math hands on activities (centers). If time allows we work on letter and word games practice stretching out sounds in words and practice ou number games.
